**Mobile servicing has to take place on private land, so a car parked on a public road cannot be serviced where it stands. The three workable alternatives are a workplace car park with permission, a friend or relative's driveway, or a private residents' parking area where the managing agent agrees.**

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| The rule | Private driveway or private land only |
| Not allowed | Public roads, shared access roads, pay-and-display |
| Usual fix | Workplace car park with permission |
| If none apply | A workshop is the right answer, and we will say so |

## What to do

1. **Check your workplace car park** — Private company car parks are the most common solution and usually the easiest permission to get.
2. **Ask a relative or friend** — An hour and a half on someone else's driveway costs them nothing and solves it entirely.
3. **Check who manages your parking** — Residents' bays on private estates are often private land. The managing agent, not the council, decides.

## Why a car service without a driveway needs private land

It is a safety and insurance requirement rather than a preference. Working under a raised vehicle beside moving traffic is not defensible, and public highway rules in most areas prohibit vehicle repairs on the road in any case. Any mobile operator willing to work on a public road is taking a risk with your car and their own liability.

## What counts as private land

- Your own driveway or garage forecourt
- A company car park, with the site manager's permission
- A private residents' car park, with the managing agent's permission
- A friend or family member's driveway, with their permission

What does not count: the road outside your flat, an unrestricted public bay, a shared access lane, or a supermarket car park.

## When we will tell you to use a garage

If none of the above is available to you, mobile servicing is not the right fit and we will say so rather than send someone out to a wasted call. A local independent garage is the better answer, and our [cost guide](https://motorservicing.co/blog/car-service-cost-uk/) will at least help you judge the quote you are given.

## Questions

**Can a mobile mechanic work on a public road?**
No. The work must be on a private driveway or private land. That is a safety and insurance requirement, not a preference.

**I live in a flat with no allocated parking. What are my options?**
The workplace car park is usually the answer, or a friend or relative's driveway. If neither is possible, book a local garage instead.

**Does a private residents' car park count?**
Usually yes, but the managing agent has to agree. Ask them, not the council.
