How batteries actually fail
Lead-acid batteries lose capacity gradually, then fail suddenly. The gradual part is sulphation on the plates, which reduces the current the battery can deliver. Everything works normally until a cold morning demands more cranking current than the battery can still supply, and that is the morning it does not start.
Short journeys accelerate this. Starting the engine takes a large slug of charge, and a ten-minute drive does not put it all back. Repeat that for a winter and the battery lives permanently undercharged.
Seven signs worth acting on
- Slow cranking. The starter turns lazily before the engine catches.
- Dimming lights on start. Dashboard or headlights dip noticeably while cranking.
- Needing a jump after standing. Three or four days parked should not flatten a healthy battery.
- Battery warning light. Usually a charging system fault rather than the battery itself, but it needs testing either way.
- Electrical oddities. Windows slower than usual, infotainment resetting, random warning messages.
- Stop-start stops working. The first thing a modern car disables when battery health drops.
- Age. Past four years, on a car doing short journeys, replacement is maintenance rather than repair.
Test, do not guess
A battery that reads 12.4 volts at rest can still fail under load. A proper test measures cold cranking amps against the battery's rating and checks the charging system output with the engine running. That second part matters: if the alternator is undercharging, a new battery will fail the same way in a few months.

Stop-start cars need a specific battery
Cars with stop-start use AGM (absorbent glass mat) or EFB (enhanced flooded battery) types, designed for the repeated deep-ish cycling that stop-start demands. Two rules follow:
- Do not fit a standard lead-acid battery to a stop-start car. It will fail early.
- Most such cars need the new battery registered or coded to the battery management system, so the charging strategy resets for a new battery rather than an old one. Skipping this step shortens the new battery's life significantly.
Getting it replaced
Replacement takes about 30 minutes at your address: test, fit, code where required, re-test the charging output, and take the old battery away for recycling. Battery acid and lead are regulated waste, so a legitimate fitter always removes the old unit.
If your car has been standing for a long period, mention it when booking. Long-term standing sometimes points to a parasitic drain rather than a tired battery, and that is a different diagnosis.
