What a DPF does
A DPF is a ceramic honeycomb in the exhaust that traps soot particles. It has been mandatory in practice on diesels since Euro 5 in 2009. It does not consume the soot continuously; it stores it, then burns it off periodically at high temperature. That burn-off is regeneration.
The filter is designed to last the life of the car, provided regeneration completes regularly. Almost every DPF problem traces back to regeneration that never finishes.
Why they block
Regeneration needs exhaust temperatures around 600°C, which needs sustained load, which needs a run at speed. A car doing five-mile school runs never gets there. Each aborted regeneration leaves more soot behind than it removed, and the cycle compounds.
Other contributors: the wrong engine oil (high-ash oil accelerates ash loading, see our oil grades guide), a faulty EGR valve, failing injectors, or repeatedly switching the engine off mid-regeneration.
Passive and active regeneration
Passive regeneration happens naturally on a long motorway run when exhaust temperatures are high enough. You never notice it.
Active regeneration is initiated by the ECU when soot loading crosses a threshold. It injects extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature. Signs it is happening: idle speed rises, the cooling fan runs hard, there is a hot smell, fuel consumption jumps, and stop-start stops working.
If you notice those signs, keep driving at a steady speed above about 40mph for fifteen to twenty minutes. Switching off mid-cycle is what turns a routine event into a problem.
The DPF warning light
A DPF light generally means soot loading is high and a regeneration is needed. It is a request, not a failure. The correct response is a sustained drive at speed, not a trip to the shops.
If the light stays on, or turns into an engine management light with reduced power, the filter has loaded past the point where the car will attempt regeneration on its own. That needs diagnosis: a diagnostic health check reads the actual soot loading percentage and differential pressure, which tells you whether you are looking at a forced regeneration or a replacement.
Forced regeneration, cleaning, replacement
- Forced regeneration. A workshop triggers a regeneration cycle via diagnostics with the car stationary. Works if loading is high but not extreme.
- Off-car cleaning. The filter is removed and cleaned. Cheaper than replacement, effective where ash rather than soot is the problem.
- Replacement. £1,000 to £2,500 depending on the vehicle. The last resort, and the reason the earlier steps matter.
Removing a DPF is illegal for road use in the UK, an automatic MOT failure, and invalidates insurance. Any garage offering it is telling you something about how they operate.
