Engine management light on
Engine management light on? What amber versus flashing means, whether it is safe to drive, and how to get the code read properly at your home from £150 + VAT.
A steady amber engine management light means a fault code has been stored and the car should be checked within a few days. A flashing light means stop as soon as it is safe, because an active misfire can destroy the catalytic converter in minutes. The only way to know the cause is to read the stored code with diagnostic equipment.

What to do
- Check whether it is steady or flashing. Steady amber: drive gently, get it read within days. Flashing: stop as soon as it is safe.
- Note what changed. Rough running, loss of power, a new noise or smell, or nothing at all. It all narrows the diagnosis.
- Get the code read, not guessed. A code is a starting point. Live sensor data is what identifies the actual cause.
Is it safe to drive with the engine management light on?
Steady amber and the car drives normally: short journeys are usually fine, but book it in within a few days. Flashing amber: stop as soon as it is safe and do not continue. Amber alongside a temperature or oil pressure warning, a sudden loss of power, or a new noise, smell or smoke: stop, because something is actively being damaged.
What usually causes it
In rough order of frequency on UK cars: oxygen and lambda sensors, a contaminated mass airflow sensor, ignition coils and spark plugs, a carboned-up EGR valve, and on diesels a blocked diesel particulate filter. A loose or failed fuel cap seal is a genuine cause of evaporative-system codes and the cheapest fix in motoring.
Do not just clear the light
Clearing a code resets the memory, it does not repair anything. If the fault is still there the light returns within a few drive cycles, and in the meantime the freeze-frame data that would have helped diagnose it has been deleted.
