What does the engine management light mean?
It means the engine control unit has stored a fault code. A steady amber light means get it checked soon; a flashing light means stop driving and get it looked at, because a misfire can destroy the catalytic converter. The only way to know the cause is to read the code.
Common triggers are oxygen and mass airflow sensors, EGR valves, ignition coils, and, on diesels, the DPF. A diagnostic health check reads the stored code and the live data behind it, which is what separates a real diagnosis from a guess at a parts swap.
