What to do
- Book a major service, not a basic one. It changes the longer-life items a yearly service does not touch and gives you a full inspection.
- Read the report properly. Numbers, not adjectives: pad thickness and tread depth in millimetres.
- Fix on a priority order. Safety items first, then anything that will fail an MOT, then the rest.
A car not serviced for years: what has degraded
Engine oil is the big one. It oxidises and absorbs moisture with time as well as mileage, so even a car that has barely moved has oil past its useful life. Once the additive package is depleted, wear accelerates on the bearings, turbo and timing components, and those are four-figure repairs.
Alongside that: a loaded air filter costing you economy, a pollen filter that has become a health hazard, brake fluid that has absorbed moisture and lowered its boiling point, and pads and tyres nobody has measured in years.
Expect advisories, and that is the point
A car that has gone three years without a service almost always has something at the end of its life. Hearing about it is the value, not the bad news. You are told what was found, what it means and what it would cost, and the decision stays with you. Nothing extra is carried out without your agreement.
